The 8th annual Phuket Games kicked off on July 23rd 2014, at Phuket Fantasy in Kamala. The opening ceremony was hosted by Director-General of the Department of Physical Education – Dr Pattanachart Kittibovorn while his deputy Dr Chanwit Polcheewin gave an opening speech and Governor Maitri welcomed the athletes. Representing PPAO at the ceremony and receiving an award as the main supporter of the event were Chief Executive – Paiboon Upattising and President of Phuket Sports Association – Saroj Angkanapilas (also PPAO Council Member).
The 8th Phuket Games 2014, a sports and recreational tournament competed by senior citizens from all over Thailand, was initiated by the Department of Physical Education with the aim of encouraging senior citizens to take up sports and recreational activities to improve their health.
The Games, which took place from July 23th – 25th, was participated by 3,500 athletes (including coaches and other staff) from 77 Thai provinces. Sports competed included: track and field, ballroom dancing, woodball, karaoke singing, badminton, petanque, golf, Thai chess and aerobic Muay Thai.
The Director-General of Physical Education Department – Dr Pattanachart commended both the Department of Physical Education and the Phuket authorities for organizing and supporting the Games. He believes senior citizens who participated will benefit both physically and emotionally. Engaging in sports and exercises not only enables senior citizens to live a fulfilled and happy life but also a long one, concluded the Director-General.
