Phuket’s 26th King's Cup RegattaOn November 6th 2012 at the new Phuket City Hall, Phuket Vice Governor – Dr.Sommai Preechasilp, together with President of Kata Group Resorts Thailand – Mr.Pramuk Audchariyachai and Director of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta sailing competition – Mr.Dragan Worchington announced more details of the 26th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.

Mr.Pramuk said “This year will see the 26th King’s Cup Regatta Phuket. One of the main reasons we hold this event is to help stimulate Phuket’s tourism industry. It is estimated that the event will bring more than 40 million baht to the island, increasing Phuket’s economic value to 300 million baht. This amount will benefit hotels, restaurants, and the sailing industry.”

This will see the introduction of a wind surfing event as part of the event, with the addition of the Phuket King’s Cup Win Surfing Championship 2012, to be held from December 2nd – 5th 2012. So far, over 40 wind surfers from around the world have agreed to join the competition including Eak Boonsawas – 2012 London Olympics Men’s gold medalist, Siriporn Keawduanggnam – gold medalist of the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics and Spaniard Marina Alabau Nira, winner of the women’s gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

This year will also feature a Junior International Jigger Tournament, aimed at encouraging young people to sail and also to create opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills to become sailing competitors in the future.
