Go Adventure Asia, organiser of the Laguna Phuket International Marathon, announced that the total number of participants in the marathon’s upcoming sixth edition is edging closer to the 4,000 mark. The event is expected to attract over 5,000 athletes from all over the world.
“We are delighted to see such an excellent reception for the 2011 Laguna Phuket International Marathon. While Thailand and many other countries have just experienced major natural disasters, this positive reaction shows that these events did not have any serious impact on the tourism industry or the activities of recreational athletes the world over,” said Mr. Roman Floesser, General Manager of Go Adventure Asia.
“We believe that this year’s event will definitely be a success. 3,243 runners have signed up for the marathon – a figure 10% higher than what we had at this time last year – and registration will be open for another four weeks. We are very confident that the number of participants on June 12 will be beyond our target of 5,000,” added Mr. Floesser.
Singapore now tops the list of countries of origin among international participants, followed by Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, the United States and Laos. Athletes from Thailand, including foreigners based in the country, account for roughly half of the current total.
The Laguna Phuket International Marathon has been an international attraction for tourists and athletes since its inception in 2006. Phuket Province and the Tourism Authority of Thailand expect this year’s sixth edition of the marathon to feature thousands of participants from all over the world, contributing to Phuket’s lively atmosphere and active tourism industry.
The 2011 Laguna Phuket International Marathon will kick off in the morning of June 12, and interested runners can sign up online for the event at www.phuketmarathon.com. On-site registration will also be available during June 10 and 11. A late-entry surcharge of 300 baht will apply.
