After three days of glorious golf, the winners of the 2010 BMW Golf Cup International have been decided. In Phuket, Thailand, it was the Asian amateurs in particular who showed their class, dominating the leaderboard in all three categories and the national competition.
In the Men’s A category (handicap up to 12), Somruk Napachot claimed a ‘home win’ with a final score of 107 net points. The Thai player finished ahead of Japan’s Shigehisa Takashina (106) and Shah Irwan B. Rusli from Malaysia (101), who had to settle for second and third place respectively.
An Australian came through to triumph in the Men’s B category (handicap 13-28): Dennis Hu (114) held his nerve to win an extremely close competition, eventually finishing just one point ahead of Yung-Chin Huang from Taiwan, Raja B. Raja Said Abidin from Malaysia, and Thailand’s Visoot Chatchavalwong.
The Ladies competition (handicap up to 28) was dominated by Gillian Lai (103) from Hong Kong, who led the field on all three days of the tournament and finished an impressive ten points clear of runner-up Annette Muir from New Zealand. Third place went to Japan’s Mitsuko Hiratsuka (90).
In the national competition, Team Malaysia successfully defended the title it won last year in George, South Africa. A score of 304 points was enough to finish ahead of Hong Kong (299) and Taiwan (293).
