Beijing Olympic gold medalist Jan Frodeno wins Laguna Phuket Thiathlon 2009

7 December 2009 – The 16th Laguna Phuket Triathlon 2009 scheduled to take place from 07.00-13.00 yesterday (6 December) at Laguna Phuket destination.

854 athletes from 30 different countires around the world including Thailand started the competition with swimming in the lagoon and in the sea for 1800 metres, followed by 55km cycling and ended with 12km running to the finish line for USD20,000 prize.

Champions from last year Richie Cunningham and Belinda Granger from Australia were back to defend their title. First runner up for last year and Beijing Olympic gold medalist Jan Frodeno, Spanish Virginia Berasategui, Canadian-Czech Tereza Macel, top ten triathletes of the world were also in the competition.

The final result, Jan Frodeno winning in 02:24:56, the second place went to Matthieu O’Halloran from Canada with an overall time of 2:36:58, the third place belongs to Balazs Csoke with 2:38:18 finish time. While Richie Cunningham reached the finish line the seventh in 2:49:51.

Belinda Granger completed in 2:49:51, this year came after Radka Vodickova new face triathlete from Czech Republic winning with 2:46:15 overall time.

Thai male triathlete with the best time was the 52nd place Chadarak Chaikamjorn in 03:01:33, and the 93rd was Jaray Jearanai in 3:12:10. The Thai woman to finish was Natcha Pinprasobsuk who completed the race in 03:23:52.

For Team Relay, Triathlon Travel was the winner with 02:46:10. The second place went to Donald Legget Racing who finished in 03:00:37 and the third was the Sheraton On B team in 03:11:10.

For 6K Fun Run starting at 8am, the champion was Mark Follett from Australia finishing in 21:45. the second place went to Jordan Schnack from Denmark who completed the run in 22:25, and the third place was Nick Dobyn, another triathlete from Australia with 22:43 finish time.
