Finnair, the flag carrier and largest airline of Finland, commenced operations to its second destination in Thailand on 14 November, launching twice-weekly flights (Fridays and Saturdays) from its Helsinki (HEL) base to Phuket (HKT). The 8,312-kilometre sector was converted from a charter service, and will be served until 28 March utilising the oneworld member’s A340-300s. Interestingly, the new service will see a frequency increase to thrice-weekly from 14 December.
Etihad’s inaugural direct flight from Abu Dhabi touched down at Phuket International Airport at 6pm local time on Sunday 26th October 2014 and was welcomed by a traditional water cannon salute, a gathering of local officials and airline representatives, and a traditional Thai dance performance.
Speaking prior to the flight taking off from Abu Dhabi at 8.40AM, Etihad’s President & CEO James Hogan said “The new Phuket route is a natural expansion of our Thai network and a strong addition to our portfolio of leisure destinations, and with attractive departure and arrival times the new service will contribute greatly to the growth of tourism to the region.”

Bangkok Airways kicks off its “Bike On Board” campaign to offer free bicycle loading apart from personal baggage. The 1st phase of the airline’s new service commenced on 15 October 2014 and will end on 29 March 2015 on its entire network except sectors that are operated by ATR aircraft.

Qatar Airways will boost services to Thailand with the introduction of non-stop flights to Phuket, effective October 26th, 2014. The airline currently serves the Doha – Phuket route daily via a linked service through the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “The start of non-stop services from Doha to Phuket offers travellers from around the world access to the popular tourist destination in a reduced time, from across our expanding global network.”

Qatar Airways started operations in Thailand more than 14 years ago with non-stop flights linking Doha with Bangkok. The carrier now serves the Thai capital three-times-daily and will increase that to four-times-daily from December 16th, 2014.
Qatar Airways launched daily flights from Doha to Phuket via Kuala Lumpur in 2010. The new non-stop service from October 26th will facilitate shorter travel times for the growing number of tourists to Phuket and for those heading out of Thailand.

Jetstar Asia customers travelling from Phuket will now be able to experience ‘Straight to Gate’, an enhanced web check-in service that offers customers without check-in baggage or visa requirements to skip the queues and head Straight-to-Gate.
More than 80,000 customers from Phuket without check-in bags are expected to be able to use the service this year from 1 July 2014.
Jetstar Asia CEO Barathan Pasupathi said that this innovative solution is expected to enhance the travel experience for our customers and streamline Jetstar Asia’s operations at Phuket International Airport.
“Today’s travellers want to minimise the time they take from their front door or hotel to the plane. This service will allow our travellers to check-in at home, at the hotel or at the office.
“Straight-to-Gate also means our operations team can focus more on serving our customers with checked bags and special needs, fast-tracking the check-in process during busy holiday periods,” he said.
Since the start of the service in Singapore in November last year, more than 45% of Jetstar Asia passengers with carry-on baggage only, have been eligible to use Straight-to-Gate.
