28 November, 2009 – Yesterday at Central Festival Phuket, Vice Governor of TAT in Tourism Marketing Mr. Wansadet Thawonsuk, together with Chief Executive of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation Mr. Paiboon Upatising, and President of the Southern Chapter of the Thai Hotels Association Mr. Methi Tanmanatrakul presided over the opening ceremony of “The Andaman Travel Trade 2009”.

The event will take place on 27-29 November 2009 under the concept “The Andaman 3 Destinations – 1,000 Activities”. Entrepreneurs in tourism sector from Phuket, Andaman and worldwide bring their products to exhibit at Central Festival Phuket.

President of the Phuket Tourist Association Mr. Somboon Chirayus said this the fourth time after its long pause affecting by the Tsunami disaster. Southern Chapter of the Thai Hotels Association raised up the idea to bring the event back. Phuket Province and PPAO are willing to support with the budget as it is believed to boost the tourism in the region.

The exhibition draws together 259 tour operators worldwide except from US and UK, 26 domestic agencies, as well as 117 entrepreneurs in Phuket and Andaman region.

Mr. Somboon revealed that Phuket saw tourist arrivals drop a little bit in this high season. The average occupancy is around 70% which is a satisfying number in such economic situation.

Executive Director for TAT Southern Region Mr. Satit Nilwong said TAT would like to encourage more tourists to travel to Andaman by focusing on quality travellers, seminars, exhibitions, and sports tourism. TAT has arranged road shows in many countries as we still believe in Phuket’s and Andaman’s potential.

“A positive sign has shown in Phuket since there are more direct flights from many destinations in this high season e.g. Australia, Hong Kong etc. We are confident that after the tour operators has already seen our products, they will be satisfied and send more tourists to us.” said Mr. Satit.

Tour de Asia Bicycle Touring Co., Ltd. collaborates with Tourism Authority of Thailand, DTAC, Chevron, Toyota, Tilleke & Gibbins, TQPR and FBT to organise “The 7th Annual Tour de Thailand”, a charity ride to raise the fund for two charitable organisations in Thailand.

One is Operation Smile Thailand who works to provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children. Another is Skills Development Centre For The Blind (a part of Foundation for the Blind in Thailand under the Royal Patronage of H.M. the Queen), a non-profit organization who provides assistances for blind and low vision people.

The ride consists of two halves, the Northern Half and the Southern Half departing from Chiangmai to Phuket. The total length is 2,300 kilometers or 1,438 miles, ride in 27 days include 22 days of riding and 5 strategic days off for sightseeing and relaxation beginning on December 8th and ending on January 3rd.
