“Dear Sponsors and Friends of PIWC,
Our new year at The PIWC starts in April. Last year was very productive, both in terms of fund raising and tightening up our administration and I am glad to report that we are able to take on a further 53 students this year, bringing our total to date up to 625. The job of identifying and interviewing suitable candidates has now been completed, always a difficult job for the scholarship committee as there are always more applicants than we can take on. All are deserving and the choice is very difficult.
Without your generous donations we could not do nearly as much. I would like to thank all of you who have made individual donations, those who have asked for donations to be made in lieu of birthday or anniversary gifts, all those who at our annual fund raising events “Stood up to be counted”. Also deserving of mention is the hard working committee of the annual “Layan Masters” and “Layan International” golf challenges and the sponsors they brought on board with them, Julius Baer, together with members who have supported us through our lunches, raffles, book sales etc. and the hard work of all the committee members to get us to this point.
Earlier this year, at the end of the Thai academic year, we were very proud and happy to be invited to the graduation ceremonies of some of our scholarship students from both Phuket Rajabhat University and Phuket Vocational College. I am sure you will join with me in wishing them the best of luck in the future. I think we have helped arm them with an education to make their way in the world and improve their lives.
We are now making preparations for the annual scholarship presentation, which will take place at Satree Phuket School on Wednesday 25th August. We hope that some of you will be able to attend and present the awards personally to the students you are supporting. If you are able to attend, please let us know by e-mail.
RSVP: email@example.com or Tel: 0872776948.
We ask that you arrive by 1.30 for a 2 pm start. The students from all Phuket schools and colleges, as many as possible from out of town colleges, sponsors, media, guests and members of the PIWC will be present.
As one cycle comes to an end with the 2010 students nominated, the fund raising committee are already working on ways to raise more for net year’s intake. This will take the form of our annual party which will have the theme “One Night In Rio” to take place at the Hilton Arcadia Hotel on 13th November. Again we hope to see many of you there. We have been able to nominate 5 students from the 2009 “Stand up and be counted” in addition to the 4 from the year before, well done all of you.
The PIWC is not only about scholarships, it is about friendship, fun and expanding our own horizons, learning more about the culture and languages of a new environment. Making newcomers welcome, and I think we have succeeded in our objectives. None of this, nor the scholarship programme would have been possible without the members’ tireless work and input. Last year we celebrated our 20th anniversary so we must be doing something right.
Thank you all for helping us with this and for helping so many young people to a better life.
With our warmest regards and appreciation,
