The event was special as host for the evening was William ‘Bill’ Hardy, the 5th generation, and winemaker and brand ambassador for the famous Australian winery Hardys. Bill has now been in the Australian wine game for 40 years and shares the same passion for making great wines as his great grandfather who founded Hardy wines. It was 160 years ago to the year that Thomas Hardy married his cousin Johanna, whom he had left England with to sail to South Australia in 1850, and purchased their first property on the banks of the River Torrens, which later become known as ‘Bankside’ and was the birthplace of Hardys wines, this being another reason the event was seen as being do special. A further reason being it was the official Thai launch of some new wines which carry Bills name, the William Hardy range.
So with the wine well and truly taken care of, it was down to Centara Grand’s Italian Chef – Mr.Matteo Verini to pair the wine with the food, which was to be prepared at four cooking stations positioned on the beautiful beachfront location.
The first course of the evening was the Riddle Brut Reserve, a non vintage sparkling wine which is fresh and flavoursome with rich fruit flavours and perfect for kick starting any event. This was paired with a variety of canapés.
Next up was the Riddle Sauvignon Blanc 2012 a fresh citrusy wine with lifted tropical fruit and herbaceous aromas, and a wine which pairs well cold seafood. For this event it was paired with a dish of Tasmanian Smoked Salmon and shrimp croquets.
This was followed by the first wine from the William Hardy range, the William Hardy Chardonnay, a fresh and lively wine with rich flavours of peach, stone fruit and lemon zest. It has a palate which is creamy and textured and has a delicate sweetness from oak complexity. The dish of choice for this wine was grilled scallops, crab meat and lobster bisque.
The next wine was the Riddle Cabernet Merlot/Merlot a classic Bordeaux blend with its rich ripe blackcurrant and plum nuances with hints of red berry and a red fruit lift, the notes of which are supported by a very subtle oak influence. The food pairing for this particular wine was Australian beef tenderloin.
The penultimate wine was the William Hardy Shiraz, a soft round and full bodied wine with rich plum and mulberry fruit flavours, complexed with dark chocolate, vanilla and clove spice. Chef Matteo chose to pair this wine with lamb stuffed with sundried tomatoes and mozzarella.
The evening was finished with more bubbles from the Riddle Brut Reserve, which on this occasion was accompanied by a range of sweet desserts.
Speaking about the event William Hardy said “The event tonight is actually a double celebration, we are celebrating Hardys 160 years in business this year and we’re also celebrating the launch of some new wines which carry my name. In fact, this new William Hardy range is being launched for the first time here at this event tonight.”
