Painting a Better Future @ Angsana Laguna Phuket

Phuket’s newest resort, Angsana Laguna Phuket, is celebrating their opening with a new charity mural designed by the island’s popular Australian artist Christopher Hogan.

The mural will be developed as a collage of 350 tiles, each painted by a different person under the watchful guidance of Christopher Hogan. This creates a masterpiece of 350 artists, all of whom leave their mark on Angsana Laguna Phuket.

Tiles can be bought on site, where Christopher Hogan holds free kids painting lessons for hotels guests, or at his gallery at Canal Village. All proceeds from the tile sale will be used to develop a new art scholarship program for locally gifted children who will benefit from Christopher Hogan’s ongoing help.

Each tile purchase includes a chance to choose the mural’s name. The winning entry not only immortalizes this masterpiece but also entitles the lucky winner to a three nights stay at Angsana Laguna.

On Tuesday 17th January Angsana Laguna held an event to kick off this great charity mural and were joined by Thai celebrities Saranyoo Prachakit and Patsipra Bhakpaiboon.

Christopher Hogan is a world-renowned artist from Australia, recognized for his unique abstract paintings. He had exhibited solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia in several cities and the Middle East and Asia. At this charity event, managed to have a short chat with Christopher.

What inspired you to become an artist?

I always had an interest in art, but the type of art I produce, contemporary abstract art, I became interested in when I was a young boy. We always went swimming on the refs and I was fascinated by the fish patterns. So as I became older my style evolved from those fish and their patterns. I did go to study in university and got a BA in visual art and I’m qualified to lecture in universities.

Why did you decide to set up your charity here?

Well I have travelled to Thailand many times before and have three grandchildren growing up in Bangkok. I started getting involved with teaching the Thai children here in Phuket and I have seen a lot of talented children who can paint very, very well. But once I left the island they would stop painting. So with Angsana Laguna, we set up collaboration and brought up this idea so that we could help the children get a scholarship and they can hopefully progress and make this a career. With all the money we can raise, hopefully someone can become a painter, sculptor, interior designer or graphic designer. So we want to recognise some talented Thai children and help them with their education.

What is the brand Christopher Hogan?

Many colours, abstract contemporary art and marine imagery. In the Angsana case I’m doing a jungle and rainforest because we are surrounded by it and we’re using the colour purple as it is Angsana’s corporate colours.

I would just like to say that I would love the Thai people to get behind this project and if there are any companies out there who would like to make a donation that would be wonderful because it is such a worthwhile cause. If people are interested please get in touch with Angsana and help us to help the Thai children.
