“Thai-mai” Culture Centre in Phuket

29 October 2009 –  Thai-mai or Urak Lawoi or Orang Laut Culture Center is collaboration between Phuket Province, Phuket Provincial Public Works & Country Planning Office, Phuket Provincial Culture Office, Rassada Municipality and sea gypsies, to preserve this their unique culture as long as to create a new destination for tourism.

The Culture Center will be constructed on 4 rai area off the Tsunami’s village entrance located in Moo 4, Baan Leam Tukkae, on Koh Sireh.

Directer of Phuket Provincial Public Works & Country Planning Anukul Sangthongchai who handle to design revealed that the design of the building has been finished. It is a creation based on the concept gathered from the sea gypsies, resembling a fish trap that is a common fishing equipment of them and minimizing energy consumption to help stop Global Warming.

When finished, the facility will provide an exhibition area, a welcome zone, and an area dedicated for activity.

The construction initially requires 2.1 million baht budget but for the completion of the project it needs 7.7 million baht approximately.
