4 Sep 2009 – At Phuket Merlin Hotel, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police Pol.Maj.Gen. Pikad Tantipongs and Chief of Phuket Customs House, Wanawan Nantiyakul were chairing in the opening ceremony of a training seminar for intellectual property examination organised by Tilleke & Gibbins International Ltd. together with, Nokia Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Diageo Brands BV, Nervous Tattoo, Inc., Adidas AG and Lacoste SA. Manyt of Phuket police, Phuket’s and Songkhla’s customs officers, and concerning officers took part.
Legal consultant of those companies, Miss Sukonthip Jitmongkolthong said although the government has put very much effort to suppress intellectual property rights violations/infringements, problems still exist. This is due to officers lack of knowledge and understanding about the product and examination process. The seminar therefore was held to disseminate knowledge on pirated products and infringing goods to enhance the effectiveness of suppression as well as to tighten a good cooperation and relations between the government and private section.
“The intellectual property rights violations in Thailand are counterfeiting activities are occurring since the violators are always seeking ways to go,” said Pol.Maj.Gen. Pikad. He worries the selling of intellectual property infringing goods especially in important attractions will destroy Thailand’s good image.
Chief of Phuket Customs House, Wanawan Nantiyakul revealed Phuket has been seizing and abolishing the violation continually. A total of 25-30 Million Baht violated products were seized in this year which is less than that of the last year however. Most of them are clothes, leather and etc. imported from other areas to sell in Patong, Kata, Karon area.
