Phuket trying to solve island’s traffic accidents

On August 10th 2010, Dr. Wiwat Sitamanote, the Deputy Chief of Phuket Public Health Office, presided over a meeting to brainstorm solutions to reduce traffic accidents in Phuket. Those present at the meeting were Pol. Col. Wanchai Akeporapit, the Commander of Phuket Provincial Police, Kanok Siripanichkorn, Head of Phuket Transportation Office, San Chantawong, Head of Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and other related government officers.

Dr. Wiwat said that the meeting was held in order to consider what caused traffic accident cases in each district of Phuket. There were a lot of people dying in traffic accidents. Most of the cases had been caused by traffic law violations, careless driving, motor bikers without helmets and drunken driving. Another reason that significantly caused accidents was substandard road line making. He commented that it had to strictly enforce traffic law and the Phuket Provincial Highway office had to improve the line making, traffic signs, and high visible signs at all sharp curves. The problem solving needs to be participated in by all the related sectors.
