On 3rd June 2013 at Phuket Graceland Resort Patong, Phuket Provincial Office Chief – Prajiad Aksornthammakul presided over a public meeting to listen to local’s opinions regarding a joint project by Patong Municipality and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to put electricity cables underground in Taweewong Road, Patong Beach.
Khun Surapol Buakeaw from Patong Municipality said “The underground electric cable construction project is aimed at improving the environment and landscape on the Patong Beach’s 3.56 km Taweewong Road. Along with hiding the cables, there will also be no pillars to obscure views, which will make the whole road more attractive and help to develop Patong Beach, a tourist attraction which should have a good landscape. However, for us to implement this project we must have the approval of the local people. Therefore, we have come here today to listen to people’s opinions. We need input from the relevant authorities, the public and private sectors, as well as other organizations, in order to clarify the scope and operational procedures, including suggestions from all sectors as to how we can adapt the project to ensure it goes smoothly and does not affect people to a great extent.”
President of the Patong Entertainment Association – Weerawit Kuressombut said “One of the main problems which is of concern is the traffic during the construction period. We must have clear construction scheduleand we must be sure that it’s fast and compact. However, we do support the project because it will definitely make the landscape more beautiful landscape and create a new image of Patong.”
