On June 22nd 2010, Anchalee Wanich Thephabutr, the Deputy Secretary General to the Prime Minister of Thailand, presided over a raising ceremony of the main post of Phuket’s new 4,000 seat gymnasium in the area of Sapan Hin Sport Center. The gymnasium’s construction was supported by budget from the 2012 Thai Kem Kang (Thai Strength) project of the Thai government. The ceremony was crowded with Phuket’s well known people, officers from related government agencies and local residents.
Somjai Suwansupana, the Mayor of Phuket Municipality, said that the old gymnasium of Phuket was built in 1982 with only 500 seats in capacity. To be ready for future international sport events that would be hosted on the island, it was necessary to construct the new larger gymnasium. It costs 152 million baht and would take 720 days in construction.
