On Friday August 1st 2014, a meeting was held at the PPAO Office between Chief Executive – Paiboon Upattising and the Chinese Deputy Consul – Wang Hui Jen (Chinese Consulate Songkla) as well as four consulate staff.
The meeting focused on the establishment of a Chinese consulate in Phuket, in addition to existing consulates in Chiang Mai, Kon Kaen, and Songkla. Madam Wang would like to see the addition of Chinese language on Phuket road maps as well as voicing concerns over problems of un-metered taxis, and unscrupulous tour agents. Each year over one million Chinese tourists visit Thailand and the presence of the Chinese consulate here would prove beneficial to Chinese tourists in need of assistance.
Mr Paiboon assured her that PPAO is adequately equipped to deal with tourists in distress. Additionally, Chinese language is taught in PPAO schools. PPAO will support the addition of Chinese language on Phuket maps as well as on signposts.
