On 11th November 2013 at Phuket Provincial Hall, Phuket Governor – Maitree Intusut together with Phuket Highways Office Director – Samak Lued Wonghad presided over a meeting regarding the survey and design of the proposed Chalong Interchange. A number of relevant departments gathered to hear about the progress.
The Project Manager – Khun Kaweerat Deeprasertwong from Epsilon Co Ltd, Consultant of Technology Co Ltd said “Around the Chalong Circle there is continuous traffic jams. From a recent survey we estimate around 20,000 cars per day pass the intersection to go towards Kata and Karon, and over 10,000 towards Rawai and Laem Phromthep. From preliminary studies there are three proposed solutions t the traffic problems, an underpass from Chao Fah West Road to Rawai, the remaining traffic would still use the circle. The second choice is an underpass similar to the first proposal but controlled with traffic lights, and the third choice is also an underpass but with a bridge linking Phuket Town towards Kata and Karon and managing traffic on traffic lights.”
He added “We have sent officers to collect information on various aspects such as economic impact, impact on people’s well-being, and environmental impact etc. At this stage we are already starting to listen to the public’s opinion.”
