The two-day forum which took place on September 1st & 2nd was launched by the Department of ASEAN of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and focused on “Phuket Tourism and AEC”. The Department of ASEAN Director-General – Athayut Srisamut co chaired the forum together with Governor Maitri Inthusut.
Prior to Phuket, the ASEAN Roadshow had already taken place in ten provinces including Udon Thani, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ubol Ratchathani, Nan, Kon Kaen, Ratchburi, Ranong, Krabi, and Songkhla. The aims of the roadshows are to educate the public of the works undertaken by many sectors in relation to corporation with ASEAN members, and proactively prepare Thailand for the upcoming AEC in 2015 by highlighting related opportunities and challenges. The operations are more focused in the provinces that border with ASEAN neighbors and also those that play important role in ASEAN Corporation.
Activities during the forum included: meeting with government officials and administrators; exchanging viewpoints among participants relating to challenges; lectures about ASEAN to local agencies, education institutions, provincial authorities, local administration offices on all levels, and the general public. An additional part of the program to raise ASEAN awareness is to organize activities in schools attached to the Basic Education Commission (where ASEAN Education Centers are located) and in schools designated the Goodwill Ambassador program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
