Phuket reveals 20mn baht fund to assist tourist victimsOn Tuesday 5th August 2014 at the office of the Phuket Tourist Association, Khun Santi Pawai – Director of the Phuket Office of Tourism and Sports, Karon Police Superintendent – Natthapakin Kwanchaipruk, Khun Sathirapong Na Takuatoong and Khun Bhuritt Maswongssa from Phuket Tourist Association joined a press conference to announce a 20mn baht fund to assist tourists who are victims of crimes or natural disasters.

Khun Sathirapong said that following an incident on 3rd July 2014 which saw 44 year old Italian Antonio Papaleo stabbed in the abdomen and robbed of his possessions at the Tsunami Warning Tower in front of the Hilton Karon, it was revealed that The Ministry of Tourism and Sports already had a fund in place to assist tourist in situations similar to that of Mr Antonio. Antonio was the first victim to receive compensation from the fund after having medical expenses over 100,000 baht.

It was felt that Mr Antonio shouldn’t have to pay for the medical expenses as the event was not his fault, which is when it was revealed that the fund was already in place.
