On 4th June 2014 at Phuket Provincial Hall, Khun Wiroj Damkong – Chief of Phuket Energy Office together with relevant officials announced a campaign to reduce the island’s power consumption and asked for the cooperation of the people of Phuket. Government agencies, state enterprises, including hoteliers, shopping malls and office buildings are being asked to reduce their energy consumption between June 13th and July 10th 2014, between the hours of 18.30 – 22.30 hrs, the time which usually sees the most electricity used every day.
They are requesting the reduction as the JDA – A18 natural gas supply in the Joint Development Area (JDA) between Thailand and Malaysia is to be closed for maintenance during the day for the entire 28 days, and this may cause the risk of electricity shut downs in 14 southern provinces. During this time, the Chana power plant at Songkhla province will also not be in use due to upgrades. The power plant is said supply around 710 megawatts per day to the southern provinces.
