San Chantawong, Head of Phuket’s Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said that there was a campaign to reduce traffic accidents in Phuket during the 2011 New Year holidays, December 29th 2010 – January 4th 2011. On January 3rd 2011 alone (1 day only), the total number of traffic accidents was 7. There was 1 person who died and 6 people injured. The traffic accidents were mostly caused by drunken drivers, over speed driving, and dangerous driving habits.
The total number of accidents from December 29th 2010 – January 3rd 2011 was 62. 4 people died, 1 in Muang District and 3 in Thalang District. There were 69 people injured. The majority of the accidents were caused by drunken drivers, over speeding driving, driving without a license, and bad driving habits. The vehicles with most accidents were motorbikes. The peak time of accidents was between 12.00 a.m. – 8.00 p.m. 50,174 vehicles were checked by the police. There were 3,091 vehicles found driving against traffic laws. Most of the cases were for driving without a license and helmet.
