On June 3rd 2010, at the conference room of Phuket’s new provincial hall, Thaworn Senneam, a Deputy Minister of Interior, presided over the meeting to follow up drugs suppression and prevention in Phuket. Those present at the meeting were Wichai Praisa-ngob – the Governor of Phuket, Pol. Maj.Gen. Pikad Tantipong – the Commander of Phuket Provincial Police, heads of local administrative organizations, and local leaders in Phuket.
Wichai reported that in the last six months, there were increased arrests for drugs both in selling and usage cases. He mentioned that most of drugs merchants came from Phang Nga, Krabi, Nakorn Sri Thammarat and Surat Thani. Some of them tried to use new channels to transfer drugs from the northern region to Phuket by ship and plane.
The related officers had strictly prevented drugs being transferred at the border of the province as well as visiting and investigating if there were drug traders or users in any communities and nightclubs. In addition, student leaders were advised about drugs prevention, behavior change and joined a morals workshop as well.
At the end of the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Interior was satisfied with the result of drugs prevention and suppression in Phuket. He said that the officials work well together, hence the good output. He further added that they should hasten the plan to suppress more drugs trade on the island.
