On Monday 13th October 2014 at Phuket Provincial Hall, the Deputy Chinese Consul to Thailand and the Chief of the Chinese Consulate in Phuket – Mrs. Wang Hui Jen, together with consulate staff held a meeting with the new Phuket Governor – Khun Nisit Jansomwong to discuss the security of Chinese tourists traveling to Phuket. They also discussed a promotional tour related to the possibility of sister city status between Phuket and a Chinese city.
Khun Nisit said “The Chinese consulate is in the process of opening a new consulate office in Phuket to serve as a liaison point for the Chinese tourists that come to Phuket, however, the finer details of the plan have yet to be finalised and we will revisit this issue again in the near future. We have also discussed the possibility of the exchange of sister city status between Phuket and cities of the Republic of China. We are now establishing a strong relationship with China and this will only grow in the future. We will start to gather information from all relevant agencies on the possibility of sister city status and will if this is plausible we will arrange for an MOU to be signed which will focus on economic, cultural and educational relations which will be of benefit to both sides Finally, we have also discussed issues in relation to Thai laws in cases such as marine accidents and illnesses.”
At present, there are over one million Chinese tourists traveling to Phuket each year, therefore it is necessary to proceed with the opening of the new consulate office in Phuket as quickly as possible.
