On 23rd April 2014 at Royal Phuket City Hotel in Phuket Town, the National Institute for Emergency Medicine and The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) together held the very first ASEAN Disaster Medicine Workshop.
The meeting was attended by Khun Anuchar Sethasathien – Secretary-General of the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM), Ms. Noriko Suzuki from JICA and Phuket Governor – Maitree Intusut. Also present at the meeting were medical disaster relief teams, officials from JICA and doctors from 10 ASEAN countries.
Khun Anucha said “This is the first time that ASEAN countries have met to prepare for medical disaster situations. The ASEAN region can experience disasters in a variety of ways, whether it’s an earthquake, volcanic eruption, tsunami, storm, flood, etc, so this meeting is an important platform for promoting the cooperation between officials and medical workers ASEAN countries in the situation of a disaster. This meeting will allow us to exchange know-how and experience on emergency medical disaster situations of each country and to improve the medical system in their own countries, to ensure that all countries are able to assist are prepared for any emergency situation.”
