On October 5th 2012 at Phuket Cityhall, Mr.Komin Noppharat – President of the gamnan and Phuyai-Baan Association together with Mr.Sin Polrob, Mr.Santisuk Sariya, Mr.Chareun Thewabuth filed objections to a new local government Act which is to be forwarded to the Ministry of Interior.
The Members of the House of Representatives have recently proposed to Parliament that a new local government Act is introduced which will mean village gamnan and Phuyai-Baan (the village headman and officials) will have their duty term fixed for only 5 years. Previously, they were able to keep the position up until they were 60 years of age.
Mr.Komin said “If the new terms mean we can only sit for five years, this means that every 5 years an election will have to take place. This can create conflicts in communities and we totally disagree with this. We are not politicians, we don’t have a lot of budget to promote or canvass. Frequent elections are not needed”.
