Jungceylon Patong Phuket Supports Dugong

Jungceylon Shopping Center Patong Phuket continues its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) by supporting conservation efforts for dugongs and the restoration of seagrass habitats in Phuket. Ms. Dissara Jangcharoen, Senior Marketing Manager at Jungceylon Patong, led a team of volunteers from Phuket Square Co., Ltd. to participate in a community activity titled “Seagrass Restoration Cages.” This initiative aims to preserve the crucial food source of dugongs and promote marine biodiversity.

As part of the support, the company donated 30,000 THB to fund materials and equipment for the activity. The donation was received by Mr. Saisanit Phongsuwan, Head of Administration at the Coordination Center of the Royal Initiative Plant Genetic Conservation Project, Phuket Rajabhat University, along with officials from the Phuket Marine Resource Conservation Center, at Tha La Beach, Pa Khlok Subdistrict, Thalang District.

Mr. Phongsuwan emphasized that the dugong population is rapidly declining and increasingly dispersed, putting the species at risk of extinction. A major factor is the depletion of seagrass, their primary food source. The construction of protective cages has shown promising results in helping seagrass regenerate, produce seeds, and spread beyond the enclosed areas—offering hope for long-term restoration.

Jungceylon’s support for the “For Dugongs” seagrass protection and restoration initiative has been ongoing. Activities include hosting public hearings for conservation measures, donating essential items, and providing amenities for field officers—such as drinking water and restroom renovations. Staff volunteers have also actively participated in fieldwork to build seagrass restoration cages at Tha La Beach.

In June 2025, Jungceylon will host the “Art from Waste for Dugongs” exhibition to mark World Environment Day and World Ocean Day. This annual event will be held at The Bay Arena, Jungceylon Patong Phuket.
