In China, a number of farmers and poor people who live in cities suffer from a disease called Leptospirosis, a disease which is spread by from the urine of wild and domestic animals, most commonly rodents. Humans become infected through contact with water, food, or soil that contains urine from these infected animals by either breaks in the skin, the eyes, mouth, or nose. Symptoms of Leptospirosis include headaches, muscle pains, and fevers and in more severe cases bleeding from the lungs or meningitis.
However, in a study by the Complementary and Alternative Healing University in China, out of 1,603 farmers who were given 100% houttuynia cordata extract tablets only 1 farmer contacted Leptospirosis disease. As a result of their study, houttuynia cordata is now used to prevent the disease.
