On September 23 2012, Mr.Xu Mingliang, the Chinese Consul based in Songkhla province and his team visited the new Phuket Solid Waste Incinerator Plant and some of the local community.
Mr.Xu made his visit as PJ Technology Limited Company, which has the concession for the incinerator, has employed China’s Guangdong Machinery Imp & Exp Co Ltd to install 2 waste burners at the plant. The burners can burn up to 700 tons of waste a day producing approximately 10 MW of electricity. It is estimated that the cost will be around 2,000 million baht.
The plant started operating in June 2012 and once complete it should help to solve a lot of Phuket’s waste problems.
The plant was needed as a result of Phuket’s rapidly growing tourist industry and will hopefully lessen the environmental problems caused by the increasing waste problem.
Phuket’s local governments approximate that there is 500 tons of waste per day and is increasing at a rate of about 7% per year.
It is estimated that by 2019 the amount of waste in Phuket will reach 1,000 tons per day, and the old plant can only deal with 250 tons per day, and the island’s 120 acres of landfill are not sufficient. The King Mongkut’s University of Technology was appointed to research and determine a proper waste management system which will solve the problem quickly. They have advised that this new system is the best solution as it can deal with large amounts of waste and can produce electricity from it.
