Phuket continues its reforestation project

Phuket continues its reforestation projectOn 17th May 2013 at Mangrove Forrest in Baan Palai, Chalong, Phuket Governor – Maitree Intusut presided over the event “800 Million Saplings for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 80th Birthday Reforestation Project”. The event was a joint project held by Phuket Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment, Development of the Mangrove Forest Resources Station 23 and saw 1,200 from many sectors participate.

The ongoing event will see 24,000 mangrove seedlings planted in a 47 rai area of degraded forest land at Palai Beach.

Kasem Sukvaree from Provincial Offices for Natural Resources and Environment Phuket said “This reforestation project is being carried out in stages, in 2012, the first year of the project, 20 million saplings were planted. The National Park, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department have now distributed further saplings for the public to plant.”

“In 2013, 180 million saplings will be planted, and each year from 2014 to 2016, 200 million saplings will be planted. The project is meant to show gratitude to Her Majesty the Queen, who is well known for her efforts in natural resource and environmental conservation.”

“While His Majesty focuses his attention on the development of water sources for agriculture, Her Majesty finds ways to aid forest and watershed conservation. She has noticed a great decrease in forested areas, and her accumulated expertise has permitted her to formulate an analysis of this problem. The root cause of the problem involves forest and watershed destruction; ignorance is another problem. Her Majesty is afraid that massive forest destruction will bring difficulties to her subjects in the future. Then she developed an idea to enable humans and forests to live together without destruction.”
