Phuket announces ‘new trash management policy’ to Local Administration Organisations

On May 19th 2010, Tri Akaradecha, a Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over a meeting of Phuket’s board on trash management. The meeting was held at the meeting room of Environment Department in the office of Phuket City Municipality. Those present were Paiboon Upattising – the President of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO), Somchai Suwansupana – Phuket Mayor, Ong-arj Chanachaimongkol – Head of Phuket Environment and Natural Resource Office, and the board committee.

The main agenda of the meeting was to consider trash management policy including household trash screening, trash collecting, truck management and standards.

The vice governor said that the board committee agreed to Local Administration Organizations or LAOs running the province’s policy in every part of the island. There must be volunteers in each area to educate people how to manage trash at their residences efficiently and how to turn bio-trash to energy. All LAOs have to establish trash screen centers in their community as well.  The project would be followed up by the province every 6 months.
