Thailand, April 2015 – EarthCheck , the world’s leading sustainable travel and tourism organization has certified Banyan Tree Phuket and Angsana Laguna Phuket, the flagship properties of Banyan Tree and Angsana Hotels & Resorts successfully achieved Silver EarthCheck Certification from March 2015.
The achievement follows on from the hotel’s garnering of Bronze Certification status just last year. Banyan Tree Phuket and Angsana Laguna Phuket were awarded with bronze EarthCheck Certification status together with five other business units within Laguna Phuket, as part of the precinct of Laguna Phuket’s sustainability efforts.
To achieve EarthCheck Silver Certification, the businesses are required to have a sustainable policy in place and to implement an environmental action plan for proper monitoring and measurements on key performance areas.
Banyan Tree Phuket and Angsana Laguna Phuket, luxury rooms and villas located in Bangtao beach, Phuket, first joined EarthCheck in 2012 through the initiative of the Banyan Tree Group to maintain its commitment to the highest level of sustainable operations – building a better society for all while integrating green practices into the operations.
Building on existing sustainability campaigns, Banyan Tree Phuket and Angsana Laguna Phuket continue to put in place a number of initiatives to engage guests, associates and the local community, such as guest room and office energy conservation, recycling of materials, maintenance of an organic farm, supporting local orphanages and elderly homes and regular tree planting with minimum of 2,000 trees per resort and beach cleaning activities.
“Having moved up from a Bronze to Silver Status in a very short time is an endorsement of our resorts’ operating processes supports long term sustainability. The team and I are keen and motivated to consistently excel and maintain this performance in order to graduate to a Gold Certification,” comments Sriram Kailasam, Area General Manager of Banyan Tree Phuket & Angsana Laguna Phuket. “Not only will the status serve us to continue promoting environmentally friendly practices; it also reminds us that it is the core responsibility of each business unit to protect the environment we operate in.”
“By taking a scientific approach to measuring the effectiveness of their sustainability practices, Banyan Tree Phuket and Angsana Laguna Phuket was able to identify where they were out-performing others and where room for improvement remained,” explained EarthCheck CEO Stewart Moore.
