On 15th July 2012, Mr.Phuripat Theerakulpisuth of Phuket Marine Department took 2 cruise operators, Royal Caribbian Cruises and Princess Cruises, to meet with Phuket Governor Mr.Tri Akaradecha to discuss solutions for problems faced by them at Phuket Harbour at Vichit Muang Phuket.
Mr.Phuripat said “Some international cruise operators have said Phuket Harbour’s channel is too small and shallow. It is inconvenient for passengers, and they have requested improvements be made. Once improvements have been made, Phuket will see an increase in the amount of cruise liners arriving at the Harbour.”
Due to the problems encountered large cruise liners arriving from Singapore & Malaysia, such as those operated by Royal Caribbean Cruises which are 312 meters long and 3 meters wide cannot dock at Phuket. The problem is currently solved using small boats to bring tourists ashore. However, this is of great inconvenience to both the cruise operators and the tourists.
Mr.Phuripat added that the proposed Phuket Deep Sea Port Project will solve the problems. Once completed it will allow more ships to dock at the harbour and will also provide tourists with improved facilities once ashore. However, this project is currently in the process of being presented to the Environmental Board, who is assessing what impact the changes will have on the environment.
