The Vegetarian Festival is one of the most famous annual events held in Phuket. Occurring on the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, the celebration is part of the local Chinese community’s belief that abstaining from meat will bring peace of mind and good health. The festival includes many exciting ceremonies such as ‘fire-walking’ and ‘blade walking’, where the performer walks across a stepladder made of sharp iron blades. During the festivities, the community also gathers for a religious procession leading to the main shrine ‘Jui Tui’, during which many participants act as mediums and gods, with some puncturing themselves through the cheeks with knives and household objects believing that with the sacrifice the gods will protect them from future harm. This year will see two ninth lunar months, a once in 100 years occurrence, the Vegetarian Festival will be celebrated twice from 24 September to 2 October 2014 and again from 24 October to 1 November 2014.
