The April Phuket Punchline Comedy night welcomes the multi-talented and award winning comedian, Mark Billingham. As well as being an accomplished comedian, Mark is a Times Top Ten bestselling novelist with his ‘D.I. Thorne’ series of books. The Daily Mail wrote, “Mark is a natural compere; brilliant at being the captain of a ship on very rough and unpredictable waters.”
Joining Mark for this big night of comedy is Mike Gunn, whose comedy has been described as “drier than a dead man’s bones”, and the “hilariously silly and brilliant stand-up” Carl Donnelly. So on Wednesday 21st April, don’t sit in bored, come on out and have a right royal laugh. It would be a crime not to!
Mark Billingham was born and brought up in Birmingham. Having worked for some years as an actor, TV writer and stand-up comedian, his first crime novel ‘Sleepyhead’ was published in 2001.
Mark began peddling his particular brand of nonsense that apparently passes for comedy, in 1987. Since that time, he’s appeared on over thirty radio and TV shows, played every comedy club in the UK and bought a new hat. As a regular performer and MC at London’s world famous Comedy Store, Mark talks dirty, waxes lyrical about animal husbandry and takes the piss out of people’s shirts.
Mark has been described as:
“Sharp and entertaining” The Guardian.
“A massively talented comedian” Manchester Evening News.
“Lower than filth” An angry caller to the BBC.
Mike Gunn’s history is as interesting and entertaining as his comedy. A misspent youth and a series of grim jobs cultivated his cynical outlook on life and a perverse desire led him to the world of stand-up. A self-confessed pessimist, he describes himself as “not a natural choice for a career in laughter”. His lugubrious comedy has been described as ‘drier than a dead man’s bones’. He has a rare ability to walk close to the line of what audiences find acceptable and yet still remain likable and funny. His reputation for being a bit unfriendly, a touch dark and even morose is really not true. In real life he’s loving, warm and philanthropic. Just a bit misunderstood.
Early in his career Mike was supporting the likes of Jo Brand and Alan Davies. He now headlines at all the top comedy venues in the UK and is rapidly reaching cult status on the circuit. He has performed internationally most notably in Australia at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival where he completed a five-week sell-out season. He also had the dubious honour of being the first comic to ever play in Kuantan, East Malaysia.
“Piercingly funny…Fiendishly funny as dry as a dead mans bones” The List
“Mike Gunn will make you die laughing” The Guardian
Carl started performing stand-up regularly in 2005 and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting new comics climbing the comedy ladder. His conversational style and silly sense of humour have seen him win a host of awards and become a regular act and MC at clubs all over the country (and the world having also performed in France, Germany, Singapore, The Netherlands, Oman, Dubai, Ireland and probably some others he has forgotten about!).
‘Best Newcomer’ Nominee, 2009 Edinburgh Comedy Awards
‘Best Breakthrough Act’ Nominee, 2009 Chortle Awards
‘Best Newcomer’ Winner, 2007 Chortle Awards
Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2007
“The reason why Donnelly is one of the highest-rated emerging stars on the UK circuit is his incredible ability to turn the seemingly mundane existence of the 21st-century slacker into gripping, unmissable stand-up. In Donnelly’s hands, something as simple as getting out of bed can be the springboard to a hilarious anecdote” The Guardian
