Phuket depends on tourism. Most of the tourists and visitors visiting Phuket spend money for goods and services on the island. This generates a lot of income to Phuket residents and entrepreneurs.
Even though the factors like natural disasters, political instability, and epidemics affect the number of visitors, there were a total of 1,504,286 tourists visiting Phuket in the first half of 2010, increasing 16.27% from last year, when there were only 1,293,800 visiting the island during the same time last year.

During this time, there were 246,082 Thai tourists and visitors visiting Phuket. It decreased 19.79% from the number of tourists and visitors during the same time in 2009.
