Phuket’s new tourist attraction – The Big Buddha
The Big Buddha or “Prahputtamingmongkol Eaknakakeeree” an official name given by the supreme patriarch of the Buddhist Church, the project was conceived by a group of local Buddhist called “Prahputtamingmongkol Sadtah 45 Foundation” in 2002. With the intention to make it the palladium of Phuket and a tribute to His Majesty the King.
45 metres tall and measuring about 25 meters broad across the lap, the statue is one of the world biggest “Mara Vichaya” posture Buddha Image. Made of the white marble brought in from Burma.
Apart from its spiritual attributes for the statue itself, the stunning view from Nakkerd Hill where the Big Buddha sits is what make it one of the greatest man made tourist attractions of the Island. From the hilltop, you will see a 360-degree view of Phuket.
Though the Hill belongs to the Karon District, to reach it, tourist may enter the access road, Soi Mahasanay, from Chao Fa (West) Road (about 2 km pass Chalong temple). Then drive up Mutita Road for about 6km.
