TAT targets young professionals for domestic budget travel campaign

thailandThe Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched an online marketing strategy to encourage young Thai urban professionals to explore different parts of the kingdom. It has also published a mini travel guide book identifying budget travel spots.

Roughly 21% of Thailand’s population of 67 million is under 15. A strong economy is helping the thousands of annual college graduates find jobs in many business sectors; such as, I.T., construction, creative arts, health and wellness, etc.

Mr Prakit Piriyakiat, Deputy Governor for Marketing Communication, Tourism Authority of Thailand said the campaign is designed to focus on domestic budget travellers particularly the young generation who have just got their first job.

The suggested travel programme will be categorized into 4 groups 1) Beach Lovers, 2) Culture Lovers, 3) Island Lovers, and 4) Mountain Lovers. Suggested packages have a price-range of 599 Baht to 2,499 Baht per night.

Mr Prakit added, “The campaign will run until February 2011 and be conducted via online media and social media, accompanied by road shows to various office buildings in Bangkok and the budget travel mini guide book which lists various destinations and accommodation options.”

He said young professionals have been targeted in this campaign because they have just started their working life, still have time to travel, and can enjoy new experiences by travelling. They also can be reached by new media channels.

He noted that after they get married, the propensity of young people to travel declines as other expenses emerge. “So, the pre-marriage working age is a good time to get them to spend their discretionary income on travelling within Thailand,” Mr Prakit said.

TAT will also provide an opportunity for travel lovers to enter their best photographs for a post-card contest that will yield 50 prizes of three-day tour packages.

All of the 50 winning pictures will be published in postcard magazine as well as on the websites www.budgettravelinthailand.com , www.thai.tourismthailand.org  and the facebook page of budgettravelthailand. Online social media members can freely forward their “fun” photographs to their friends.
