Bangornrat Shinaprayoon, the Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office, said there was 70% of room reservation rate during the Songkran festival. The beachfront hotels were 80-90% fully booked, meanwhile the booking rate of hotels in town were 40-50%. The festival made about 800 million baht for the island.
This year TAT and related sectors hosted many events supporting Phuket tourism including Phuket Bike Week 2011 and Songkran festivities in the Patong and Phuket Old Town areas. There were more than 8000 tourists coming to splash water in the Old Town area alone. Moreover, in April-May there will be many airlines opening their new routes to Phuket e.g. Air Bagan, Hong Kong Airlines, and charter flights from New Delhi.
