Dr. Jirachai Amornpairoj, the president of Patong Hotels Association, said that from the perspective of tourism in Phuket, the industry would recover this coming high season because of the recovering domestic political situation and world economy. The exports of Thailand showed that the country’s economic overview was recovering. Moreover, a security guarantee was the main factor affecting the tourism situation.
However, Phuket was facing a problem of an imbalance between the room rates for tourists and the number of tourists. In other words, there were too many rooms in Phuket: he said there could be up to 50,000 both legal and illegal rooms. This made the hotel owners need to cut down the room rates. So, even though the number of tourists increased, the incomes of the hotels were not increasing. He also added that most of the tourists who would visit the island in this high season will be Europeans, Scandinavians, Australians, and Russians.
