Laguna Phuket will once again be the focus of worldwide triathlon attention when the legendary Laguna Phuket Triathlon and iconic Laguna Phuket Ironman 70.3 are staged on back-to-back weekends at the luxurious destination resort to launch the island’s high season in carnival style.
Laguna Phuket Triathlon on Sunday 25th November and the Ironman 70.3 on the following Sunday 2nd December will be linked by a week-long “Tri-Fest” of related training and social events for the many age-group and professional athletes who flock from all over the world to Laguna Phuket each year to soak up its unique triathlon ambience.
Triathlon, contested over gruelling swim, bike and run courses, is the world’s fastest-growing participant sport, attracting devotees who travel far and wide to pursue their endurance dreams.
Laguna’s courses amid the tropical paradise island are particularly testing – swims are in the Andaman Sea and then across a freshwater lagoon; bike courses feature sets of fearsome hill climbs; and the run courses are on a variety of surfaces in and around the Laguna resort.
Laguna Phuket Triathlon, now in its 19th year and dubbed “The Race of Legends” in tribute to legendary athletes who have contested its courses over the years, has a swim of 1.8km; bike of 55km and a 12km run.
The longer 2012 Laguna Phuket Ironman 70.3 will be the third staged at the resort, with a swim of 1.9km, bike of 90km and a 21k half marathon.
Laguna Phuket’s Tri-Fest staged between the two races, will offer opportunities for triathlon devotees to rub shoulders with the many professional athletes taking part in the races at a series of training and social events, all held in a carnival atmosphere.
