Tawichart Intarit, Head of Phuket Cultural Office, said that Phuket would establish a sea gypsy cultural center. The center would be located in a 4 Rai area of Tsunami Village, Baan Laem Tuk Kae, Koh Sire, Muang, Phuket. The center would help to preserve the valuable culture of sea gypsies and it would be Phuket’s new tourist attraction in the future.
The center’s building is designed in the sea gypsy’s traditional fish trap shape. It best reflected the way of life of the sea gypsies who lived their lives friendly to nature. The area in the center would be divided into three main sections including an exhibition section, welcoming section, and outdoor activity section. The estimated budget in construction is about 6.9 million baht.
The budget would be supported by Phuket government’s 2010 annual budget for 2,100,000 baht. The rest of the budget for 4,838,200 baht would be requested from the government’s Thai Khem Khang Project.
Tawichart said that now there was land development at the center’s location provided by Rassada Municipality. He said the construction would begin as soon as the government approved the requested budget.
