On 9th April 2013, in a joint committee meeting for the public and private sectors, Chief of Phuket Marine Office – Phuripat Theerakulpisut said that due to the increasing number of traffic jams in Phuket, caused by the ever increasing number of vehicles on the roads, a project has been set up which could see the addition of sea lanes to facilitate tourists travelling from Phuket International Airport to Patong and from Patong Beach to the airport. There is currently only one 50 km available route available which can take anywhere between 60 or 90 minutes to travel. However, if there was the option of a sea route the distance would be only 25 km, and it would only take 20-25 minutes to reach the destination point. This would not only reduces the tourist’s travel time but also reduce some of the traffic problems. It is estimated it would cost around 181 million baht to implement the project.
Vice President of Phuket Chamber of Commerce – Mr Jarun Sangsarn said that he agreed that the project was a great alternative for the tourists, however, there must be good management put in place and impact study must take place to see what the advantages and disadvantages would be to Phuket’s citizens and tourists.
