Jui Tui Shrine

On October 14th, Jui Tui Shrine, the biggest shrine in Phuket, held its street procession around Phuket Town. There were over 2,000 mediums of Chinese gods and goddesses who performed self torture in the procession, with piercing by weapons including swords, even beach umbrellas, cut flowers, umbrellas, hand tools and many others. The purpose of self torture is to divert misfortune from people who join the vegetarian festival.

There were over 10,000 Phuket residents and tourists waiting along both sides of the roads to witness the sacred procession. In front of many houses & shops, altars were set up to welcome the god and goddess mediums who walked past. Phuket Town was crowded and loud with the sound of many firecrackers.

At Surin Circle or the Clock Tower Circle, the bystanders were warned to be aware of their personal property including wallets, mobile phones, etc since the police were reporting that there were some tourists who had been pick-pocketed.
