On November 24th, at Patong Pier, Wannaprapa Sooksomboon, the Assistant Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office, welcomed a group of 900 tourists from Amway SLS (Sales Leadership Seminar) 2010, Indonesia, coming to visit Phuket from a cruise ship.
Wannaprapa said that TAT Phuket, Patong Municipality, and Kathu Police Station together held the welcome ceremony for this group of tourists. Since the visit of this group of tourists was during the high season, it would be a good opportunity for the island to create a good experience travelling in Phuket. Hopefully they would then help to promote Phuket tourism to their friends and family in Indonesia. It was estimated that there would be over 2 million baht of turnover during their stay.
In addition, in 2009 there were 7,000 more tourists who came by cruise ship for vacations in Phuket. 30% of these tourists came in big tour groups with 900-1500 tourists. Phuket got about 1 million baht of income from each group of tourists. There were 5-6 cruises coming to Phuket per month – most of the passengers were Singaporeans, Malaysians, and Indonesians.
Wannaprapa added that right now 90% of rooms were reserved in Patong hotels, 70% in Phuket town. However, in December, hotels on the island were 100% booked since the many tourists like spend their time during Christmas and New Year holidays on the island. Moreover, 80% of rooms were already booked by Indian and Chinese tourists during the Chinese New Year 2011.
