The Optimist Racing Programme at Ao Yon continues to go from strength to strength.
The newly formed, Phuket Sunshine Sailing Club, has just organised a 12 day race training course in Ao Yon, led by two Thai Coaches from the Royal Thai Navy, Sattahip.
The existing Optimist Sailors, whom live at the Phuket Sunshine Village Foundation, first stated sailing at the PYC but have now set up their own club – The Phuket Sunshine Sailing Club, with the objective to develop a full-on Race Training & Regatta Programme, providing healthy sponsorship continues from local businesses & overseas organisations.
Leading the event from the Navy was K. Sutee Poonpat (Noi), a very accomplished sailor, who started sailing Optimist as a boy and has gone on to win various championships to include a Gold Medal at the Asean Games. Coming from a strong family background to sailing, his brother coaches the Optimist National Team and he coaches the A-Team, the feeder group into the National Team and has been coaching sailing for over 10 years.
The new cub has also formed good ties with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, (YRAT) who helped bolster up the boats borrowed from Yacht Haven Marina with boats from the Navy Base, Tablamu to make this event possible.
Held between the 11th -22nd October, the course provided the sailors to hone crucial skills in the sport, including starting and finishing techniques, mark rounding, boat speed and general tactical skills essential to racing. As well as sailing the team were introduced to general fitness and nutritional tips for competition.
The course finished with a two day regatta. With a good steady breeze over the two days, 7 races were completed and saw some very exciting and close competition. “It was great to see how their skills had developed over the 10 days as the children employed key sailing techniques as conditions demanded, says” Katy Gooch from Topper Sail Phuket, who helped organise the event.
The 12 day event ended with a Prize Giving Ceremony presented by Captain Pornpoj Vorrasart Results: Optimist A fleet – 1st Place Sutida Poonpat (First), 2nd place, Teerapong Tohkrotoak (New), 3rd place Sukanya Saiman (Anne).
