Videos & photos: 5th Seniors World Cup Football tournament kicked off in Phuket

Just a few days before the big World Cup 2010 in South Africa, Phuket is playing host for the 5th Seniors World Cup football or soccer tournament during May 31st – June 5th.

The opening ceremony took place at Surakul Stadium in Phuket City, in front of VIPs led by Somsak Thepsutin, former Minister, and a large lively crowd, with peaceful security and good medical facilities, which is important considering the ‘senior’ or old age of most of the players. The teams of 11 must have a goalkeeper aged 38 and above; & three other players aged 38 – 44; five players aged 45 – 49 years old; and three players from 50 and above!

Teams from eight nations are participating in the event, with four playing in Group A at Surakul. They are Iran and Thailand, who drew 0-0 in the first match, and England who beat Armenia 3-2 in the second match. Four other teams play in group B at Karon Stadium; Australia beat USA 3-0 in their first match, while Taiwan beat New Zealand 2-0 in the second match.

Apparently the participating teams requested to play in Phuket to promote tourism and hope that it would help Thailand regain tourist confidence after the recent troubles. The organizers estimate that the event will create a circulation of around 25 million baht.  Phuket already played host to the Seniors World Cup Football tournament back in April 2006.

Phuketindex went to Surakul Stadium to catch a copy of some of the opening ceremony and football action from NBT TV Phuket.

We also went along to Karon Stadium to film the action there and get two interviews: with the New Zealand manager & player, Bruce MacDonald, who is 66, and a bit worried about the humidity for his players, but is enjoying the beautiful location near the beach, during a half time break in the 1st game, but before his team’s game; also with Australian manager, Gary Marocchi, after their 3-0 win; they were also very hot following their 4-6pm game; they are one of the favourites having got to previous finals, but they have to overcome their arch rivals New Zealand in the next game on Tuesday: for more info see www.fisaseniorsworldcup.com
