Video & photos – several stranded sailing boats still beached at Kata on Sunday

regattaregattaFootage from Kata Beach, Phuket on Sunday early afternoon 12 December, the day after an unexpected storm and monsoon waves forced about 10 yachts in the Phuket King’s Cup regatta onto the beach, causing damage and cancellation of the last day in regatta. Footage includes interview in English & Thai at the end with Commander Pornprom of the Royal Thai Navy, who is leading a rescue mission for the yachts, after skippering his own crew to 4th place in IRC2 class. A RTN amphibious/salvage ship, brought in from Phang Nga north of Phuket, was only able to drag one RTN yacht off the beach on Sunday at high tide.

regattaregattaregattaAttempts will continue with cranes and tows when conditions calm down, but at the time storms and strong westerly winds continued to batter the coast here. In the meantime some of these expensive yachts have now become new temporary tourist attractions with many people taking photos and a few making videos like us!
