Last week five sailors representing Phuket Yacht Club took part in the Hua Hin Regatta 2010.
The Yacht Racing Association of Thailand and other organizations organized this regatta to commemorate His Majesty the King’s 60th Wedding Anniversary.
In this Regatta there were 220 boats entered with sailors from 13 countries including Thailand. With over 120 Optimist the sailors were split into two fleets, the Phuket Team joining the Optimist Division B Open Championships.
Akapoj Kankeaw (Tik) deserves to feel proud as he receives his award from His Excellency Admiral Chumpol Pachusanon, Privy Counsellor, His Majesty the King’s Representative.
On their first day the youngsters were invited to train with the National Team. This was a good experience for all the sailors but as the wind picked up Anne’s mast broke ending her training abruptly. Day two again saw some good winds with a squall hitting during the practice race that had to be abruptly abandoned due to nil visibility.
The youngster then raced for 3 days in mixed seas with the second day being a true test of skill and stamina as the kids stayed on the water for 7 hours while that ran 4 races. The Phuket team displayed some real sailing skill with three sailors finishing in the top the 30 with two sailors in the top ten.
The Phuket team was represented by Teerapong Tohkratoak (New) age 13, Tanawat Sangkam (Ton) age 14, Akapoj Kankeaw (Tik) age 13, Chonticha Chaklang (Ja) age 12 and Sukanya Saiman (Anne) age 13.
