On July 30th 2010, Tri Akaradecha, a Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over a meeting to discuss the annual volleyball tournament “Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT 2010”. There were representatives from related sectors attending the meeting including Wirat Patee, Head of Phuket’s Sport Authority of Thailand; Somkuan Rawirat, a secretary to Thailand Volleyball Association; Asin Arammethepongsa, a Consultant to the President of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization; Sompong Dabpet, the Deputy Mayor of Karon Municipality; and Geoffrey Rowe, Managing Director of Pentangle Promotions Co. – the tournament organizer.
Tri informed that Phuket was again selected by FIVB to be a host location of this international female beach volleyball tournament for 4 years, 2009-2012. This year the competition will take place during November 2nd – 7th 2010 beside Karon beach. The related sectors are preparing to make the competition perfectly organized.
Geoffrey Rowe added that apart from the professional competition, this year there would be an international amateur volleyball competition called ‘Beach Volleyball Around the World’ held in the event as well. There would be 200-300 volleyball players from Europe and Asia coming to join this tournament plus 1,000 spectators. Around 6,000 hotel room nights would be booked during that time and there would 40 million baht of income generated into the island.
He told Phuketindex in June that “We recently visited Mr. Paiboon (the President of Provincial Administrative Organization or PAO), in Phuket requesting support for the beach volleyball. He said (then) he was unable to support the (amateur) event. I was looking for some support from Phuket as we planned to introduce a worldwide amateur programme …The main event is still on in Phuket this year, however as a number of provinces are interested in staging the event in 2011 and are willing to provide financial assistance I am not certain where we will stage the (whole) tournament from 2011 onwards.” It looks like he now has some financial support for the amateur competition, so Phuketindex hopes its long term future as host is now more secure.
Last year an amateur competition for local hotel female teams only was held for the 1st time alongside the professional event and was won by a JW Marriott team.
However after this report above was posted, Geoffrey Rowe further informed Phuketindex: “Just to clarify the situation: Originally I was going to cancel the amateur events, however as the process had been started I decided to continue with those events without securing any additional investment to date. As a result, I expect to make a loss for the 2nd successive year. This means I must give serious consideration to an alternative venue for 2011 as other provinces have shown interest in hosting the event. The meeting with the Deputy Governor was positive and his team was very cooperative, so I have not yet ruled out Phuket for 2011.”
