On August 10th 2010, at the meeting room of Phuket Provincial Hall, Teerayuth Aiumtrakul, a Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over a meeting to discuss preparation for the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships that would take place in Phuket.
Monthon Chartsuwan, a representative of the Thai Weightlifting Association, said that the association had considered presenting Phuket to be a host location for the World Weightlifting Championships in 2015. It was because Phuket had a high possibility to host the international sports event. The island was also ready in accommodation, transportation and tourist attractions.
Apart from Phuket, there were two other provinces presented to be a host location of the event: Pattaya in Chonburi and Hua Hin in Prajuabkirikhan. These three provinces had been presented to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
He added that if the island was chosen to be a host location of this event, there would be one million U.S. dollars (about 32 million baht) of budget spent on event organizing.
Meanwhile Chairat Udomkitpanya, a Deputy Secretary to the Thailand Weightlifting Association, said that formerly Thailand had hosted the event once in Chiang Mai. The feed back at that time was very good. He mentioned that if Phuket could host this competition, there would be about 2,000 visitors coming to join the event on the island. The event would be broadcast live to 400 million people all over the world. This would directly boost Phuket tourism atmosphere during that time. It was expected that there would be approximately 1,000 million baht turnover on the island during the 10 day event, September 14th – 27th 2015.
